Celebrate the Vernal Equinox

The vernal equinox, or March equinox, is just around the corner. It is one of two equinoxes that occur 6 months apart.

What is the vernal equinox?

The vernal equinox is technically one of two times during the year when the sun is exactly above the equator. During the vernal equinox, the Northern Hemisphere begins to tilt towards the sun as the Earth rotates. This is what brings us longer days - and more warmth - all the way up until summer. The word equinox literally means equal night. During the equinox, therefore, the shorter, colder winter days turn into warmer, longer spring days.

The vernal equinox is sometimes also called the spring equinox because is signals the beginning of spring. The word vernal literally means fresh or new, which is what springtime brings to us. When the earth is tilted away from the sun, winter comes and hardly anything can grow. When the earth tilts back towards the sun and we get more warmth and energy from it, new life can once again begin to grow and flourish.

Spring is a most wonderful time of new life. It has come to be known as the time of year when we celebrate newness. It’s a time for fresh starts all around. We do spring cleaning not because we don’t clean at all during the winter, or at any other time of the year, for that matter, but because it’s all in keeping with the idea of freshness that comes with the spring season.

Out with the Old, In with the New

Traditionally, there was always a lot of cleaning to do in the springtime because it was always too cold and too snowy to really do anything much during the winter. Work therefore piled up, and people were only able to get things back in order when the snows started melting. The snows also covered a lot of plant life, and their remains got left behind as the ice melted away. Cold weather also meant damp weather inside heated homes, creating a great environment for mould to flourish. Without much warm sun to battle it, mould often spread and infested clothing, beddings and other household items. What a lot of cleaning to do! Sometimes, the infested materials could not be salvaged and had to be disposed of and replaced with new pillows, new sheets and blankets - new everything.

Nowadays, we don’t have to deal with a lot of that, thank goodness! But we still carry on the tradition of spring cleaning and the celebration of newness during this wonderful season of life.

This spring, give yourself a fresh start with a new look and feel in your home. Give yourself new life with a healthier and more comfortable style.
